Somersby Action Group would like to thank all those who have contributed to the fight against Somersby Fields.

The names are too many to list but special mention should go to those technical experts who wrote reports commenting on inadequacies in the Environmental Assessment and to the literally thousands of letter writers who expressed their opposition to the mine. Without these two groups of people, the mine would have gone ahead to the detriment of the School and Somersby Community.

BREAKING NEWS -- Monday 10th August 2009

Minister Keneally visited Somersby today and issued this news release. Basically, the mine proposal has been REJECTED!

Thankyou, Minister. After 13 years fighting this threat to our school and community, we finally have a resounding NO!

Somersby Action Group has been fighting a sand mine proposed to be located less than 200m from the local public school. SAG also promotes issues relevant to the local Somersby Community.

Somersby is located in the quiet hinterland of the Central Coast (NSW, Australia). It is primarily an agricultural area but also has many other businesses such as many large nurseries, flower growers, agricultural research, horse breeding and gravel and sand mining.

The Sand Mine was first proposed more than 10 years ago. The community has been fighting this proposal from the first (known now as 05-0137, Somersby Fields Sand Extraction Proposal). There is no local support for the mine. Somersby Public School is against it. The local Council is against it. The State Government Upper House has expressed its opposition to it. No-one in their right mind would accept that a mine should be allowed next to a school.

This website presents serious, detailed objections prepared by the local community that have been submitted to the Department of Planning in response to the proposal.
